Project Overview
Every year agriculture ranks in the top three hazardous industries along with construction and mining. In 2001, a NIOSH survey estimated that there were 4.7 injuries per 100 farms in the Northeastern United States. This translates to over 2700 injuries in Pennsylvania in one year. In addition to these injuries, it is well documented that there are at least 25 fatal agriculturally-related injuries each year in Pennsylvania. Injuries, both fatal and nonfatal, expose producers to legal liabilities in addition to health and wellness risks. The objectives of this project were to improve Pennsylvania producers understanding of agricultural hazards and safety and health policies and regulations through a minimum of four regional workshops, hazard assessments, and one-on-one consultations. A total of 50 farm operators attended the workshops with 4 farm operators making substantive changes in their risk management strategies.
